Gary A. Miller, CFA

Gary A. Miller, CFA is Founder and Chief Investment Officer of Frontier Asset Management, LLC, a company he founded in 2000. He is widely recognized as a developer and the first practitioner of returns-based style analysis to evaluate investment managers and design diversified investment portfolios. Mr. Miller has been constructing portfolios of mutual funds since 1987.

In 1987, Gary co-founded Optima Funds Management, an investment advisory firm specializing in managed portfolios of mutual funds. In 1995 he became Chief Investment Officer of ADAM Investment Services and LCG Associates, Inc., an institutional investment consulting firm, when ADAM purchased Optima. Mr. Miller became Chief Investment Officer of Portfolio Management Consultants, a leading provider of investment services to independent financial advisors, when PMC purchased ADAM in 1997. He joined The Private Consulting Group of Portland, Oregon as Chief Investment Officer in 1999.

Mr. Miller earned his MS in Management, concentrating in Investment Management, from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he was a Presidential Fellow. He did additional graduate work in Engineering, Mathematics, and Systems Science at California Polytechnic State University and Portland State University. He earned his BS degree in Engineering from Humboldt State University. Mr. Miller is a Chartered Financial Analyst charter holder and a member of the CFA Institute.


Scott A. MacKillop

Scott A. MacKillop is President and Chief Compliance Officer of Frontier Asset Management, LLC. He has over 30 years experience in the investment industry, a career he began as a lawyer in Washington D.C. specializing in corporate, ERISA, securities and venture capital matters.

Prior to Frontier, Mr. MacKillop served as President of US Fiduciary Services (“USF Services”), which provides managed account and investment consulting services to financial institutions and investment advisory firms. Mr. MacKillop was also founder and President of Trivium Consulting. Trivium helps financial services firms develop fee-based investment management and consulting programs. At Trivium, Mr. MacKillop worked with over 50 clients, including Bear Stearns, the Frank Russell Company, JP Morgan Fleming Asset Management, Wells Fargo and Nationwide.

Mr. MacKillop formerly served as President of Portfolio Management Consultants (“PMC”, now a part of Envestnet Asset Management), one of the first firms to provide separate accounts to independent advisors. He also served as President of ADAM Investment Services, one of the first firms to provide mutual fund managed account services to independent advisors, and as Vice President of ADAM’s affiliate, LCG Associates, Inc., an institutional investment consulting firm.

Scott speaks frequently to industry audiences. He has authored numerous articles on managed accounts, investment consulting and behavioral finance, and more. His articles have appeared in Journal of Financial Planning, Investment Advisor, Financial Advisor, Financial Planning, Financial Strategies, The Monitor and The Wrap Fee Advisor.

Scott received a BA from Stanford University and a JD from George Washington University Law School. He holds a Series 65 securities license.


Geremy van Arkel, CFA

Geremy van Arkel, Principal, has been involved in the construction of mutual fund portfolios since 1993. Mr. van Arkel specializes in mutual fund analysis, investment manager analysis and due diligence, and portfolio management. He has also worked extensively with portfolio diversification and global asset allocation techniques. Prior to joining Frontier, Mr. van Arkel was the Manager of Investment Analysis for EnvestnetPMC, a firm with over $5 billion under advisement.

Mr. van Arkel earned his BBA in Finance from Stetson University with a concentration in Investments, and completed the prestigious Roland George investment program. Mr. van Arkel holds the Chartered Financial Analyst designation and is a member of the CFA Institute.


Robert E. Miller, CFA

Robert Miller, Principal, is responsible for the investment management of all mutual fund client accounts. Rob has been involved in the management of mutual fund portfolios since 1999. Previously, he researched market and economic data as an Asset Allocation Analyst for the Private Consulting Group. Rob also researched and gathered economic data for investment models and created databases to manage client portfolios as an Investment Analyst at PMC Investment Services, Inc. He earned his BA in Economics from Whitman College with a minor in Computer Science. Rob is a Chartered Financial Analyst charter holder and a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Colorado.


David Wm. Nelson, CIMC, CIMA

Dave Nelson, Managing Director, joined Frontier in 2009, with over twenty years of investment experience. More recently, he assisted in portfolio development and presentations while at Bank of America’s Consulting Services Division. His clients included SMAs, mutual funds, ETFs, and alternative investments such as private equity, hedge funds, and real estate.

Previously, At AMVESCAP subsidiary AIM Private Asset Management, Dave spearheaded efforts to offer SMAs in major wire houses and independent broker/dealers. Dave also authored a number of booklets on various aspects of practice management and spoke nationally on these topics.

While chairing the Investment Review Committee of AMVESCAP National Trust Company, he initiated and oversaw the development of a sophisticated quantitative and qualitative fund analysis and ranking system for the INVESCO administered 401(k) plan.

As head of the advisory services division for IFG Network Securities, Inc., Dave oversaw service expansion into both mutual fund and SMA-based turnkey asset management programs, which, combined with a program of ongoing education and advisor support, resulted in a 23-fold increase in fee-based assets.

Dave received both his MBA and his BA from the University of Denver. He holds the Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA) and Certified Investment Management Consultant (CIMC) designations, as well as FNRA Series 7, 24, 27, 63, and 65 licenses.


Charles C. Burgess, CFA

Chuck Burgess, Investment Analyst, specializes in mutual fund research and due diligence. Chuck worked as a Senior Fund Analyst with Oppenheimer Funds in Denver in between tours of duty at Frontier. Mr. Burgess earned a BS in Finance with an emphasis in Banking and Financial Services from the University of Wyoming. Chuck is a Chartered Financial Analyst charter holder and a member of the CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Colorado.


Cristine M. Calkins

Cristine Calkins, Portfolio Analyst, comes to Frontier with seven years of investment experience at a wire house brokerage firm. She holds a Series 63-Uniform State Exam license. As Frontier’s Portfolio Analyst, Cristine is responsible for setting up and reviewing client accounts, as well as advisor services. Cristine attended Sheridan College.


Erin M. Foote

Erin Foote, Senior Account Manager, monitors client accounts and makes decisions about the appropriate trades for each. She maintains Frontier’s client databases, billing records, and compiles information for quarterly performance reports. Erin is also in charge of setting up new accounts, distribution, and account change requests. Mrs. Foote earned a BS in Finance with an emphasis in Banking and Financial Services from the University of Wyoming.


Brenda L. Jacobs

Brenda Jacobs, Account Manager, is responsible for maintaining advisor relations and handling client requests. Brenda comes to Frontier with a wide range skills gained from experience as a consultant for Accenture and as a web developer/marketing associate for a small agricultural company. Brenda earned a BA in French from the University of Wyoming.


Todd A. Miller

Todd Miller, Senior Software Engineer, is responsible for the development of Frontier’s information system, which includes the integration of our database with data exported from commercial off-the-shelf applications, and the design and implementation of proprietary software used for client profiling, investment research, portfolio management, and performance measurement. For the twelve years prior to joining Frontier, he served as an Instructor of Computer Science at McMurry University in Abilene, Texas. Todd received his BA in Computer Science and Mathematics from Midland Lutheran College in Nebraska, and his MS degree in Computer Science from the University of Wyoming. He has completed the required coursework for a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Texas at Arlington.


Krista Jorgenson

Krista Jorgenson, Operations Specialist, brings eleven years of business experience in sales, marketing and operations. She is responsible for daily downloads from the custodians and assists the operations department with reporting and checking trades. Krista earned a BA in English Literature from Montana State University-Bozeman.
